navigating life's stages

Goals are what we would like to happen.

Life transitions are what is happening, planned or unplanned.

Life can be busy.

Between work, family, and everyday responsibilities, there's rarely time to step back and ask whether life is unfolding in the way we hoped. It is often during periods of change or uncertainty that we pause and reflect. A retirement date approaches. A business is sold. An inheritance is received. Family circumstances change, health issues could appear, even a divorce. Suddenly, important questions come into focus:

Am I making the right financial decisions?

What comes next?

What do I want life to look like from here?

How can I use my wealth to support the people and priorities that matter most?

You don't have to know what you need

We specialise in helping individuals and families navigate these important life transitions.

While many clients initially approach us with a specific financial question, such as a pension decision, retirement planning challenge or inheritance tax concern, we often find that the real conversation is much broader. The financial issue is simply the starting point. Our role is to help you step back, look at the bigger picture and ensure your wealth is aligned with the life you want to live and the legacy you want to leave.

A life transition is more than a financial event. It often brings emotional, practical and personal change as well. It can be a time of uncertainty, but also a time of opportunity, a chance to reassess your goals, clarify your priorities and create a roadmap for the future.

Every life transition begins with an ending. Letting go of the past can be difficult, but it also creates space for new possibilities. With the right guidance and a clear plan, times of change can become some of life's most rewarding opportunities.

Life stages and transitions

The 100-year life

With life expectancy increasing, we're not just planning together for retirement, we are now planning for a 30-year post-career chapter. And that requires more than a nest egg. It demands purpose, relevance and adaptability. Your ability to earn, and the mindset to keep learning, becomes your greatest asset.

At N2 we believe retirement isn't about stepping back, it's about stepping into your most exciting chapter yet. As life expectancy grows and the definition of work evolves, your financial plan should do more than help you stop working. It should give you the freedom to reinvent how you live, earn and contribute.

Selling a business

Selling a business is a complicated process, and it usually takes around three years to receive the final payout. It is a transition period in which management of the business is handed over to the new owners, and there are a lot of emotions involved.

It is also the period in which achieving the targets agreed with the buyer is very important to receiving the expected final payout, and the wider economy can sometimes help or detract. At N2 we help clients selling a business through the process, adjusting their financial plan as new information becomes available, to reassure them they will have enough in retirement. As payouts are usually lump sums, the timing of investments can be high on the agenda. At N2 we have a specific process for investing lump sums.

Receiving an inheritance

Inheritances are hard to plan in advance, as the value is relatively unknown due to possible long-term care costs for parents. At N2, our view is to plan conservatively. We often find that the greatest value of an inheritance is not necessarily increasing spending, but improving financial resilience, providing greater flexibility, and creating opportunities for future generations.

As with selling a business, payouts are usually lump sums, so the timing of investments can be high on the agenda. At N2 we have a specific process for investing lump sums.

Intergenerational planning

For many families, financial planning is no longer just about one generation. Increasingly, clients want to support children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren while maintaining their own financial security. Intergenerational planning is about helping wealth move efficiently between generations, whether through gifting, education funding, property deposits, trust planning or inheritance tax (IHT) strategies. Getting the balance right is important. Supporting younger family members today can make a significant difference to their future, but not at the expense of your own financial independence.

At N2, we help families understand the long-term impact of financial decisions across multiple generations. By integrating intergenerational objectives into your financial plan, we also encourage family conversations around money, helping create clarity, understanding and confidence for everyone involved.

Divorce

Although this is an unwanted and unplanned situation, divorces do happen. At N2, we have years of experience in helping people through this life transition. Working together with your solicitor, we can help one party design their financial plan after divorce, and as a result help with the financial settlement.

Beyond the immediate settlement, divorce often requires a complete reassessment of your financial future. Income needs, housing arrangements, retirement objectives and investment strategies may all need to be reviewed. We use cashflow modelling to help clients understand how different settlement outcomes could affect their lifestyle, retirement plans and long-term financial security. This allows decisions to be made based on evidence rather than emotion during what can be an extremely challenging period.

We can also act impartially for both parties as a Pension on Divorce Expert (PoDE), helping to fairly value and divide pension assets. As pensions are often among the most valuable assets in a marriage, ensuring they are considered correctly can have a significant impact on each party's future financial wellbeing. We understand that emotions and uncertainty are high during divorce proceedings, and sometimes it can be difficult to think clearly about financial matters. We provide calm, impartial advice to help you understand your options and make decisions that support your long-term financial wellbeing.

Long-term care

One of the biggest uncertainties in later life is the potential need for long-term care. Whether care is required at home, in assisted living or in a residential setting, the costs can be substantial and difficult to predict. Many people worry about becoming a burden on their loved ones or seeing their assets depleted by care costs. While no one can know exactly what the future holds, planning ahead can significantly improve the range of options available and reduce financial stress for both you and your family.

At N2, we help clients model a range of potential care scenarios within their financial plan, assessing the impact on income, assets and inheritance objectives. We can also help evaluate funding options and identify strategies that create greater flexibility should care be required in the future. By incorporating long-term care planning into your wider financial plan, you can gain confidence that your future needs have been considered, while preserving as much financial security and choice as possible for both you and your family.
